how I met John Lennon

one hot summer day

I sat down at some café outside

and ordered a beer.

the waiter brought me a can

unopened.

no glass…

suddenly

a shadow hovered over me

and a voice asked

“would you like to share this beer, please?”

I looked up and

there was John Lennon

looking like he did

on the 8th of December

1980,

when he was 40 years old.

“is this the last beer?”

I asked.

“indeed,” he said, “and it‘s quite hot today.”

I shrugged in acceptance

and popped the can open.

he sat down beside me

and we sipped

the beer in silence.

“what are you doing here?” I asked.

“same as you,” he said,

as it should have been

clear from the beginning.

“could we take a picture together?” I asked.

“only if you let me direct it,” he said.

as I had no objections

he stood up,

and made a silly face.

“now stand beside me and look serious.”

and so I did

holding my phone up

and positioning it just

right. but the sun

shone straight

into my face and as

I snapped the picture

I blinked.

i woke up.

it was the morning

of December 8th,

2015.

and it was snowing outside.

the first snowstorm of the year.
